Ferrari drew its experience for the 488 GTB in the F1 and GT racing. Inspiration came from the 458 in the World Endurance Championship to which Ferrari hold the title and has won its category in two editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The new model also shares the full knowledge of the Ferrari engineers over the last decade through the XX program.

The 3902 cc power unit is Ferrari's most powerful performance engine ever made with zero turbo lag and a unique, seductive soundtrack. It delivers 670 cv at 8,000 rpm with a specific power output of 172 cv/l. The maximum torque of 760 Nm in seventh gear and a throttle response time of just 0.8 seconds at 2000 rpm in third gear. The 488 GTB sprints from 0-62 mph in 3 seconds flat and from 0-124 mph in 8.3 seconds with cylinder heads and roller finger followers to reduce the power absorbed by the valve train at 10 percent lower revs thanks to reduced friction. The use of flat-plane crankshaft architecture guarantees maximum compactness, lower mass and helps improve the engine's internal fluid-dynamics.

The large rear diffuser has curved fences which optimizes the expansion of air channeled under the car. It also features variable flap geometry controlled by a CPU, integrated with other vehicle control systems, adjusting the balance between increased downforce (flaps closed) and drag reduction (flaps open).
The base bleed air intakes on the car's sides are divided by a central flap. The flow over in the upper part of the flap, is also used for the engine air intake, is deflected and exits from the tail area to reduce the drag caused by the low-pressure wake directly behind the car. The flow from the lower part of the flap goes to the intercoolers to cool the intake charge.

Designed by the Ferrari Styling Center, the 488 GTB features very sculptural edges, the large signature air intake scallop is a nod to the original 308 GTB and is divided into two sections by a splitter.
A new color, Rosso Corsa Metallizzato, was developed to highlight this model's extremely sporty character as well as its unique elegance and exclusivity. The 488 GTB has a surprising depth and glossiness achieved by using a triple-layer formulation by millions of micro-particles are suspended in the paint.
